What range should a medication fridge stay in?

Refrigerated vaccines are stored between 2 °C and 8 °C (36 °F and 46 °F), and most neurotoxins list the same refrigerated range on their labels. Your product's package insert is the final word, so check it for anything you store.

How to use this log

  • Check the fridge at the start of each workday and record the current temperature plus the minimum and maximum since the last check. CDC recommends checking min/max at the start of each workday.
  • Take a second reading before you close, so a problem during the day is caught the same day.
  • Use a digital data logger with a probe in the fridge if you can. CDC recommends one for vaccine storage because it records temperatures between checks.
  • Initial every entry. An inspector reads a log with initials and times as a real record; a column of identical numbers in the same pen reads as filled in later.
  • Keep completed logs. CDC's vaccine guidance is to keep temperature logs for 3 years.

If a reading is out of range

  • Don't discard anything yet. Label the products "Do not use" and keep them stored at the correct temperature.
  • Note the time, the temperature and how long it may have been out of range.
  • Contact the manufacturer and your medical director about whether the products can still be used.
  • Write what you did in the action column. An out-of-range day with a clear action is a normal record; an out-of-range day with nothing written is what an inspector asks about.

Questions

Should I log in Fahrenheit or Celsius?

Either, as long as the whole sheet uses one. Circle the unit at the top so nobody compares a °F reading against a °C range.

Do I still need a paper log if my fridge has a digital display?

A display only shows the temperature right now. The log is what shows it was checked every day and what happened when it wasn't in range.
