What to clean, and how often

CDC's environmental infection control guidance focuses on surfaces people touch often and surfaces near the patient. In a med spa that means the treatment chair and everything within reach of it between every patient, and shared high-touch surfaces such as door handles, the front desk and restrooms at least daily.

The starting list covers those. Add your rooms and devices, and cross out what doesn't apply.

Getting disinfection right

  • Use an EPA-registered hospital disinfectant, and follow its label for dilution and contact time: the surface has to stay wet for that long to work.
  • Clean visible dirt first. Disinfectants work on clean surfaces.
  • Follow each device maker's instructions for its handpieces and tips. Some can't take certain chemicals.
  • Write the disinfectant and its contact time at the top of the sheet, so new staff use the same one.

Questions

Does every box need initials?

Initials are what turn a checklist into a record. A ticked box shows something was done; initials show who did it, which is what an inspector asks when something is missed.

Is this enough for sterilizing instruments?

No. Cleaning surfaces is different from reprocessing instruments. Reusable instruments that enter tissue must be sterilized; use an autoclave log and spore test log for those.
