What a training record should show
OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Standard lists what a training record must include: the dates of the training, the contents or a summary of the session, the names and qualifications of the people who ran it, and the names and job titles of everyone who attended. It must be kept for 3 years from the date of training. This sheet has a place for each.
Trainings a med spa usually records
- Bloodborne pathogens: at the start of the job and at least every 12 months after.
- Hazard communication: the chemicals you use and their safety data sheets.
- Emergency response: the emergency kit, anaphylaxis and vascular occlusion protocols, and where everything is.
- Laser safety, for staff working with or around lasers.
- Fire safety and evacuation, and any device training from a manufacturer.
- Privacy and patient records.
Tips
- Use one sheet per session and file it by date. Attach the slides or handout if you have them.
- OSHA requires bloodborne pathogens training to include a chance for interactive questions and answers with the person running it, so a video on its own isn't enough.
- Track each person's due date for annual training, so no one lapses past 12 months.
Questions
How often is bloodborne pathogens training required?
At the time of first assignment to tasks with exposure, and at least annually after that, within one year of the previous training. Also when tasks change in a way that creates new exposure.
Can we train online?
Online material can be part of it, but OSHA requires an opportunity for interactive questions and answers with the person conducting the training, who must know the subject as it applies to your workplace.
