Daily check or full check?

Most clinics split crash cart checks in two. A quick daily check confirms the equipment that has to work straight away: the AED passes its self-test and has in-date pads, the oxygen is full, suction works and the cart's seal is unbroken, so nothing has been taken out. A full check, drawer by drawer with expiry dates, is done monthly and every time the cart is opened.

This sheet is the daily check. For the drawer-by-drawer contents, use our emergency kit checklist or your cart's own contents list.

How to use this checklist

  • Check each day you treat patients, and write the seal number so a broken or replaced seal is obvious.
  • Follow the AED maker's instructions for self-tests, pad expiry and battery life. Write the pad expiry on the cart itself.
  • Record oxygen as a pressure reading or "full", and swap the tank at the level your supplier recommends.
  • After any use, restock, check every drawer, reseal and note the new seal number in the problems column.

Questions

Does a med spa need a crash cart?

It depends on your state, your procedures and your medical director. Many med spas keep an emergency kit rather than a full cart. Whichever you have, it should be checked on a schedule and the checks written down.

What if the clinic is closed some days?

Leave those days blank or write "closed". A blank on a day you treated patients is the gap an inspector will ask about.
