What OSHA requires
- Portable fire extinguishers must be visually inspected monthly.
- They must have an annual maintenance check. The employer must record the annual maintenance date and keep that record for one year after the last entry, or for the life of the shell, whichever is less.
- Where extinguishers are provided for employees to use, employees must be trained in their general use and the hazards of fighting early-stage fires, when first hired and at least once a year.
How to use this log
- Give each extinguisher a number and write where it is, so a missing one is obvious.
- Do the monthly check on the same day each month and initial the box. Write anything wrong in the notes and get it fixed.
- Write the date from the service company's tag in the annual column when the yearly maintenance is done.
Questions
What's the difference between the monthly inspection and annual maintenance?
The monthly inspection is a quick visual check anyone trained can do: in place, charged, sealed and undamaged. Annual maintenance is a more thorough check, usually by a fire equipment service company, who updates the tag on the extinguisher.
Can the monthly check be digital?
Yes, as long as there's a record of each monthly inspection. Many clinics initial the tag on the extinguisher and keep a log like this one, which is easier to show an inspector.
